CHICAGO, IL — June 26, 2025 — Today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic strips Medicaid patients of the right to choose trusted providers like Planned Parenthood for essential health care. Defunding Planned Parenthood won’t just close clinics—it will destabilize access to sexual and reproductive health care nationwide, including abortion.

Abortion funds, like the Chicago Abortion Fund, already step in when abortion costs are not covered by Medicaid. This ruling will only deepen that need. If states are allowed to cut Planned Parenthood out of Medicaid, people who need reproductive health care will face fewer options, longer delays, and high costs.

Megan Jeyifo, Executive Director of the Chicago Abortion Fund, issued the following statement:

“Abortion is part of a spectrum of reproductive healthcare—and many of our clinic partners provide a range of care, from cancer screenings to gender-affirming care to abortion. This decision will decimate access to this critical care, especially for communities who already face systemic barriers.

At the Chicago Abortion Fund, we know what happens when Medicaid doesn’t cover abortion care—people call us. We’re already supporting callers every day who are navigating collapsing systems, and we’re prepared to keep doing it.

Every day, we coordinate care with independent clinics, Planned Parenthood, hospitals, and telehealth providers to ensure that anyone relying on Illinois can get the abortion care they need—on their timeline and at the location that works best for them. To request support, visit the CAF Helpline and complete an intake form.”

Illinois remains a vital national access point for abortion care, and CAF will continue to serve as a trusted resource for those facing logistical, financial, and legal barriers. Whether callers are dealing with clinic closures, travel barriers or delays, or insurance denials, the CAF Helpline Team is ready to help them navigate care with dignity and autonomy.
